沉默讲了一个外来者的故事，聋哑女孩的到来对于表面平静的家庭是侵入，虽然由于她的聋和哑，每个人都对她讲自己的秘密，那些龌龊的秘密，并借此释放心中的压力。在西方，外来者是个很典型的形象，就像卡夫卡《城堡》中的K，外来者的闯入，使得观者可以从一个新鲜的角度去观察一个全新的世界。在外来者迷惑的观察下，平衡被打破了，隐藏的矛盾渐渐显现了出来。那些矛盾实在外来者出现之前就存在的，只是由于种种原因，局内人保持着一种心照不宣的默契，于是矛盾就平衡了，在这种平衡中持续的存在。
导演选取了一个不错的角度来表现问题。这个外来者显得很安全，因为她什么都听不见，什么都不能说，她作为一个抽像的人的符号存在，不能对自己造成任何的威胁，却可以称为倾诉减压的对象，于是所有的秘密都集中并且放大了。这个平静小镇的平静的家庭和学校就显得不再那么平静了。家中父女的乱伦，母亲失败的婚姻和吸毒，以及高中生之间早已远离单纯错综复杂的关系。这是影片的前一部分所表现的，导演用镜头批判的表现了一个看似单纯的世界，用Dot的眼睛。
影片的后半部分，这么说并不严格，Dot能听见能说话好像是接近结尾的事情了。从那时起，影片就变得更加的扑朔迷离了。那个沉默的Dot有着自己的秘密表面上是她的聋哑是装的，实质上却是发生在她身上的不伦之恋。从这时起，Dot失去了外来者的身份，她便成了局内人，只有导演的镜头依然保持者外来者的身份继续冷冷的看看着一切。这一转变是很奇妙的。作为外来者，比如《城堡》中的K，一般来说是保持着不同于已经趋于平衡的世界中的某些更加纯洁的特质的。可是这种转变让外来者也失去了这种纯洁，世界变成了纯粹的变态。当两个有着自己秘密的女孩在钢琴前亲密的演奏时，整个电影显得变态而诡异，这时一种放大的变态。
电影本身是很干净的，如题名一样的沉默安静，还有贝多芬的故事，宁谧的钢琴声，充满活力的高中生（虽然显得过于成熟而缺少高中生的很多特点，或许美国的高中生就是如此吧）。还是值得一看的，但是，我想，我是不会再看它的。虽然画面没有什么过分的，甚至非常安静唯美，it made me sick.
