在胡弗家里，奥莉芙在为选美而努力，她的家人同样在为各自的事情忙得焦头烂额。身为“成功法则”培训师的.爸爸理乍得(格雷戈·金尼尔)深信自己的那套法则能度人成功，整天喋喋不休的将其法则运用到日常生活中。妈妈谢丽尔(托妮·柯利特)忙着做个贤妻良母，一心维持家庭和谐，虽然她已经受够了丈夫的夸夸其谈。奥莉芙的哥哥德韦恩(保罗·丹诺)讨厌任何人，他发誓要考上空军学校，不达目的就不说活，为此他已经坚持以笔代口9个月了。奥莉芙的舅舅弗兰克(史蒂夫·卡莱尔)刚刚从医院回来，原本是心理学教授的弗兰克喜欢上自己的男性学生，在示爱遭拒之后，自己一心想得到的奖又被情敌所获得，接受不了打击的弗兰克一怒之下干出傻事，丢掉工作的他割脉自杀，虽然被救但自觉人生无希望。最开心的家庭成员应该算是与奥莉芙并肩作战的爷爷(阿兰·阿金)，他在老人院吸毒之后被赶回家，对女人很有“好感”的色老头决定将自己的经验传授给奥莉芙，让她学会如何成为有吸引力的女人。
这个奇怪的家庭，里面充满着矛盾，然而这一切不和谐在一辆旅行车上解决了。奥莉芙要去加州参加选美，买不起飞机票的理乍得用一辆破旧的旅行车载家人前往加州，3天的旅途中发生了许多事情，理乍得的出书计划泡汤濒临破产，谢丽尔与丈夫的矛盾越来越激化，德韦恩知道自己是色盲无法参加空袜帆军考试而失声痛哭，爷爷在睡梦中悄然去世。在一系列的不幸事件的伴随下，奥莉芙来到加州参加比赛，期间发生了许多搞怪的事情，胡弗一家在3天的旅途中学会了如何沟通，家人如何互相关心，即使困难重重，胡弗一家找到了生活的阳光。
