Madam President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, faculty, family, friends, and, most importantly, today's graates,x0dx0a尊敬的Faust校长,哈佛集团的各位成员,监管理事会的各位理事键圆,各位老师,各位家长,各位朋友,以及最重要的各位毕业生同学,x0dx0a x0dx0aThank you for letting me share this wonderful day with you.x0dx0a感谢你们,让我有机会同你们一起分享这个美妙的日子。x0dx0a x0dx0aI am not sure I can live up to the high standards of Harvard Commencement speakers. Last year, J.K. Rowling, the billionaire novelist, who started as a classics student, graced this podium. The year before, Bill Gates, the mega-billionaire philanthropist and computer nerd stood here. Today, sadly, you have me. I am not a billionaire, but at least I am a nerd.x0dx0a我不太肯定,自己够得上哈佛大学毕业典礼演讲人这样的殊荣。 x0dx0a x0dx0aI am grateful to receive an honorary degree from Harvard, an honor that means more to me than you might care to imagine. You see, I was the academic black sheep of my family. My older brother has an M.D./Ph.D. from MIT and Harvard while my younger brother has a law degree from Harvard. When I was awarded a Nobel Prize, I thought my mother would be pleased. Not so. When I called her on the morning of the announcement, she replied, "That's nice, but when are you going to visit me next." Now, as the last brother with a degree from Harvard, maybe, at last, she will be satisfied.x0dx0a我很感激哈佛大学给我荣誉学位,这对我很重要,也许比你们会想到的还要重要。 x0dx0a x0dx0aAnother difficulty with giving a Harvard commencement address is that some of you may disapprove of the fact that I have borrowed material from previous speeches. I ask that you forgive me for two reasons.x0dx0a在哈佛大学毕业典礼上发表演讲,还有一个难处,那就是你们中有些人可能有意见,不喜欢我重复前人演讲中说过的话。 x0dx0a x0dx0aFirst, in order to have impact, it is important to deliver the same message more than once. In science, it is important to be the first person to make a discovery, but it is even more important to be the last person to make that discovery.x0dx0a首先,为了产生影响力,很重要的方法就是重复传递同样的信息。 x0dx0a x0dx0aSecond, authors who borrow from others are following in the footsteps of the best. Ralph Waldo Emerson, who graated from Harvard at the age of 18, noted "All my best thoughts were stolen by the ancients." Picasso declared "Good artists borrow. Great artists steal." Why should commencement speakers be held to a higher standard?x0dx0a其次,一个借鉴他人的作者,正走在一条前人开辟的最佳道路上。 那么为什么毕业典礼的演说者,就不适用同样的标准呢?x0dx0a x0dx0aI also want to point out the irony of speaking to graates of an institution that would have rejected me, had I the chutzpah to apply. I am married to "Dean Jean," the former dean of admissions at Stanford. She assures me that she would have rejected me, if given the chance. When I showed her a draft of this speech, she objected strongly to my use of the word "rejected." She never rejected applicants; her letters stated that "we are unable to offer you admission." I have difficulty understanding the difference. After all, deans of admissions of highly selective schools are in reality, "deans of rejection." x0dx0a x0dx0aMy address will follow the classical sonata form of commencement addresses. The first movement, just presented, were light-hearted remarks. This next movement consists of unsolicited advice, which is rarely valued, seldom remembered, never followed. As Oscar Wilde said, "The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself." So, here comes the advice. First, every time you celebrate an achievement, be thankful to those who made it possible. Thank your parents and friends who supported you, thank your professors who were inspirational, and especially thank the other professors whose less-than-brilliant lectures forced you to teach yourself. Going forward, the ability to teach yourself is the hallmark of a great liberal arts ecation and will be the key to your success. To your fellow students who have added immeasurably to your ecation ring those late night discussions, hug them. Also, of course, thank Harvard. Should you forget, there's an alumni association to remind you. Second, in your future life, cultivate a generous spirit. In all negotiations, don't bargain for the last, little advantage. Leave the change on the table. In your collaborations, always remember that "credit" is not a conserved quantity. In a successful collaboration, everybody gets 90 percent of the credit.x0dx0a毕业典礼演讲都遵循古典奏鸣曲的结构,我的演讲也不例外。 90%。x0dx0a x0dx0aJimmy Stewart, as Elwood P. Dowd in the movie "Harvey" got it exactly right. He said: "Years ago my mother used to say to me, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be ... she always used to call me Elwood ... in this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.'" Well, for years I was smart. ... I recommend pleasant. You may quote me on that.x0dx0a电影《Harvey》中,Jimmy Stewart扮演的角色Elwood P. Dowd,就完全理解这一点。 x0dx0a x0dx0aMy third piece of advice is as follows: As you begin this new stage of your lives, follow your passion. If you don't have a passion, don't be satisfied until you find one. Life is too short to go through it without caring deeply about something. When I was your age, I was incredibly single-minded in my goal to be a physicist. After college, I spent eight years as a graate student and postdoc at Berkeley, and then nine years at Bell Labs. During that my time, my central focus and professional joy was physics.x0dx0a我的第三个忠告是,当你开始生活的新阶段时,请跟随你的爱好。 x0dx0a x0dx0aHere is my final piece of advice. Pursuing a personal passion is important, but it should not be your only goal. When you are old and gray, and look back on your life, you will want to be proud of what you have done. The source of that pride won't be the things you have acquired or the recognition you have received. It will be the lives you have touched and the difference you have made.x0dx0a我还有最后一个忠告,就是说兴趣爱好固然重要,但是你不应该只考虑兴趣爱好。 x0dx0a x0dx0aAfter nine years at Bell labs, I decided to leave that warm, cozy ivory tower for what I considered to be the "real world," a university. Bell Labs, to quote what was said about Mary Poppins, was "practically perfect in every way," but I wanted to leave behind something more than scientific articles. I wanted to teach and give birth to my own set of scientific children.x0dx0a在贝尔实验室待了9年后,我决定离开这个温暖舒适的象牙塔,走进我眼中的"真实世界"----大学。 x0dx0a x0dx0aTed Geballe, a friend and distinguished colleague of mine at Stanford, who also went from Berkeley to Bell Labs to Stanford years earlier, described our motives best:x0dx0a我在斯坦福大学有一个好友兼杰出同事Ted Geballe。 他对我们的动机做出了最佳描述:x0dx0a x0dx0a"The best part of working at a university is the students. They come in fresh, enthusiastic, open to ideas, unscarred by the battles of life. They don't realize it, but they're the recipients of the best our society can offer. If a mind is ever free to be creative, that's the time. They come in believing textbooks are authoritative, but eventually they figure out that textbooks and professors don't know everything, and then they start to think on their own. Then, I begin learning from them."x0dx0a"在大学工作,最大的优点就是学生。 x0dx0a x0dx0aMy students, post doctoral fellows, and the young researchers who worked with me at Bell Labs, Stanford, and Berkeley have been extraordinary. Over 30 former group members are now professors, many at the best research institutions in the world, including Harvard. I have learned much from them. Even now, in rare moments on weekends, the remaining members of my biophysics group meet with me in the ether world of cyberspace.x0dx0a我教过的学生、带过的博士后、合作过的年轻同事,都非常优秀。 x0dx0a x0dx0aI began teaching with the idea of giving back; I received more than I gave. This brings me to the final movement of this speech. It begins with a story about an extraordinary scientific discovery and a new dilemma that it poses. It's a call to arms and about making a difference.x0dx0a我怀着回报社会的想法,开始了教学生涯。 x0dx0a x0dx0ax0dx0a x0dx0ax0dx0a

You know what I hear? I hear, the clock ticking. Time waits for no man. Life goes by and it goes by quick. Don't waste those years don't waste them live them. Back off? Negative. Not happening in fact I'm stepping it up. No complacency. No complacency no backing off. No slack whatsoever. Bring it. Fight. Fight that ticking clock with everything you got and the earlier you get in the game and get on track the better life you'竖悉re gonna have. Healthier, wealthier, stronger, smarter, better. Go through the motion. I don't really want to workout? I workout. Don't really know what to get up and get out of bed? I get up and get out of bed. Don't give in to the immediate gratification that is whispering in your ear. The desire to take the path of least resistance the downhill path the easy path. Shut that down. Do not listen to that little voice. Instead go through the motions. Life the weights sprint the hill get out of bed. Get things done. And by simply going through the motions you stayed on the rightous path the discipline path which is right where you know that you belong. If you grind on Monday and you grind on Tuesday and you grind in Wednesday but you chill on Thursday and you chill on Friday and then grind on Thursday and they grind on Friday sooner or later they are gonna catch you. I've told every kid in America that tells me they are coming for me you gonna work hard for it. Because I'宴扮m gonna find out what the benchmarks are. I'm gonna reach the benchmarks and I'm gonna excel that thing.

Many years ago, the movie about the youth became very popular, every year, we can see many hot movies about the protagonist’s passed youth. People like to recall their passed youth, which makes such movies sell good. But I find the common things about these movies, all the protagonists’ youth are about fighting, love and other negative things. I understand the directors’ intention, they want to tell people youth is not perfect and having pities. Of course movie is exaggerating, the real youth is about studying, at least, most people have worked so hard to get into their ideal colleges. What the movies describe make up some people’s youth, for which they don’t have the chance to experience. We should not be misled by these movies, for the teenagers, their job is to study, so that they can have a bright future.

After seeing so many movies about the youth, we are starting to wonder about what do we have in our youth, the fight, the drink or the love? My answer is no. What we see from the movie is not true, the plots are exaggerated and misunderstood. For students, their youth is the process of fighting. They have studied so hard to realize their dreams. When they are in primary school, they want to do well and make their parents be proud of them. When they are in middle school and high school, they need to take part in the exams so as to enter the better future schools. Even they are in college, they still need to study and fight for the ideal job. There is no doubt that most people keep fighting for their future and this is the memory of youth.
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to st.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
youth is a precious gift and a golden time in our life. when we are young, we are strong and healthy. it is the time for us to prepare ourselves to become responsible citizens.
youth comes only once in a lifetime, therefore, it is important that we should not waste those years in idleness and bad living. this is also the time when our memories are best. we are able to learn more ring this time than when we become older. ring our younger years, we have the enthusiasm to set high goals for ourselves. we also try to overcome obstacles which are placed in our way.
if we realize how precious youth is, we will be fulfilled when we are young as well as when we are older. if we waste our youth, we will spend the rest of our lives wishing we could be young again.
It was New Year's night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake. When he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal—the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and remorse. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads--one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs;the other leading to a deep , dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.
He looked towards the sky and cried painfully," O, youth, return! O, my father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I'll choose the better way!" But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.
He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life;he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His remorse, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were now honored and happy on this New Year's night.
The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents' early love for him. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer to look towards the heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry:" Come back, my early days! Come back!"
And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream, which he had on New Year's night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those who still linger on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain. "O youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!"

Efforts toward the success of the process, at first glance, like a blacktunnel, sight of the head, such as Middle School graating class of students, there are endless day of work, on the go, feel not enough sleep, many peopleevery day, "the first cantilever cone piercing, to burn the midnight oil", a dayin the "two line" between the hard work ... ... every day life is like a copierin print, everything is repeated.
Do not forget, the sun is new!
基物New, is a beautiful state of mind!
The new sun, Is this not a hope?
Every day see it, is like night and see the light of the black population,is it not a happiness?
Yes, the weight of our heavy burden almost collapsed, too highexpectations, we are firmly nailed to the ground, but perhaps the greatestburden is also a symbol of life enriched.
Nietzsche said that people do not suffer the power of pessimism, so we donot have to smile toward victory, but the face of temporary difficulties, wehave to smile, but also to heart smile.
It suddenly began to rain. I was still walking leisurely along the pathwhen I saw a white thing on the path. Walking past, it was only a woundedbutterfly. It was struggling to climb up the water hole in the grass with itsslender legs. There was a picture in front of me: the big raindrops fellinexorably, and a white butterfly flapped its wings. The raindrops hit him. Itcouldn't fly, but it didn't stop. It's been flying... Finally, he found a grassthat could shelter from the rain. The butterfly then stopped. However, thebutterfly was so weak that he accidentally fell into a nearby puddle. The rainstopped and it went on and on. Because it knows that there is a new startingpoint for climbing. Looking at it, a kind of inexplicable sadness welled up inmy heart. I quickly picked up the butterfly and put it in my hands, holding himto a sunny rock. I watched it silently. After a while, the butterfly's wingswere dry. Slowly, his wings flew up. The white butterfly flew around me for aweek, as if to thank me. It seems to say to me, "you have to work hard to makeprogress toward tomorrow's new starting point!" The butterfly slowly flew away, leaving me infinite ream. Yes, the starting point is in front. On the wayforward, no matter how hard it is, you must keep trying and never give upeasily. Because every tomorrow is a new beginning, a new path.
I think: we are from a starting line to the other starting line, thebeginning of the life of a beautiful life. Let us move towards a new startingpoint, the struggle of life, no regrets.

Just read a report, a 19-year-old girl how clever, because of the exam hadno confidence a bit, although the test scores more than 7 points, colleges anniversities to admit a line in the result under the single day take pills onhimself. This may be stressful. What a pity it is! She is not mature enough toknow the consequences of such a test. She does not know the consequences of herparents' love for her, or the influence of her parents' loss.
Adversity makes a man. Can suffer, can exercise a person. Hunger and thirstfor water, the value of a bowl of rice; Poverty and hardship, cold faces, hardships and setbacks can shape your character. On the way of learning, I feelthis way, when you feel learning is inferior to others, you will loseconfidence, or even give chance to others, when we want to know, opportunity isnot literally let to let go, is their fighting for. The hardship of life andstudy is such a torment, "the earth" always makes fun of it. We take the hardexperience and the growing season, record it! At the same time, it is possibleto find out the reasons for the hardship. Maybe there is no self-confidence, butthe people who lose their self-confidence can come back again. Yes, yes, likethe 19-year-old girl, she could have finished her studies, but she lost herself-confidence.
Let us remember the bitter lesson! I hope everyone has self-confidence.Believing in yourself is the end of success.
Good afternoon,ladies and gentlemen!
I’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! my topic isOpportunities and Challenges.
First, I would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? Happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. If I had asked this question topresident Nixon, he would probably had said,”Our destiny offers not the cup ofdespair, but the chalice of opportunity.”
Needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to China is the20xx Olympic Games. Till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. How much changes have you seen? New roads, new subway lines, public-exercisingequipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots ofmodern gyms which are under construction.
Other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by theOlympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example, more and more peoplewill get to know China. I’m sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attractthem strongly. And the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness ofenvironmental protection is being strengthened. What is more, Olympic Games givea unique opportunity to inspire and ecate a new generation of Chinese youthwith the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit. Now that we have seen so manyadvances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?
I’ve already said a lot about the Olympics and China. But I think everyoneshould use some time to think of this question, ”Does the Olympic Games have anyspecial meaning to you?”
For us, I mean the Chinese youth, 20xx Olympic Games is a tremendous gift.Because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying thelove given to us .The society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captainis waving his hand and saying ”Hey! Come here and take the helm! ”How charminghis voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. This morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the Olympic Games waving its hand. Afterchewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the OlympicGames. And mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfortto others.
At the end of my speech, I hope all the preparation will go well, andeveryone will show their ability to the world. Let us seize opportunities andgive a big smile to challenges.

The Great Debaters

Abbandonata Dal Destino Da Rua à
