故事的男主角是一位盲人。他的嗅觉非常灵敏，他能通过闻到他附近女性身上的香水味，推测她用的什么牌子香水、推断她有什么爱好等等，每次都猜的很准。
“闻香识女人”算是他的一个本事。他的这个本事也与他的丰富的人生经历有关。换句话说，在他眼盲之前，他是个见悉斗过世面的人。
他不是一位普通的盲人。他原是名美军陆军军官，中校，作战大英雄。他不得不离开已服役26年的部队，他不愿意呆在军人之家，寄居在侄女的家里。
他的行为和脾气有些古怪，如:他不喜欢别人叫他庆陆棚长官，不喜欢别人主动搀扶他，喜欢发脾气，甚至说脏话......
这一年，外甥女一家开车出远门度感恩节，他不愿意同去。他正酝酿了一个自杀计划:坐飞机头等舱，到纽约城里，住最贵的酒店，吃最好的大餐，坐豪华出租车，去见他大哥最后一面，和有名的风尘女睡一觉，然后躺酒店的大床上用枪把自己脑袋打爆。

整个影片中，共有三次“闻香识女人”的故事情节。
前两次，都发生在他实施自杀计划的过程中。
第一次，他和查理坐在飞机头等舱里，他闻到空姐身上散发的香水味，猜出香水的品牌，又通过香水和说话口音，推断出空姐名字；
