As the ark's tailgate is lowered, Gordon is killed when he falls in between the gears, followed by Tenzin's large electrical power drill. Yuri sacrifices his life to get his two sons on in time, but the obstruction prevents the gate from closing, rendering the ship unable to start its engines. The tsunami arrives and begins to flood the ark, drowning Tamara and setting the ark helplessly adrift. Jackson and Noah work together to free the drill and its cable from the closing mechanism. As the arks set sail for the Cape of Good Hope, Jackson reconciles with his family, and Adrian starts a relationship with Laura. The movie ends with a view of the Earth revealing all continents have merged, and are in the shape of the African continent.

到了2011年，更多令人费解的现象愈演愈烈，一个极其富有的沙特商人，决定捐出超过10亿美元给英国军/情/6/处和世界文化遗产基金会（其会长即总统的女儿劳拉），把许多传世珍宝如《蒙娜丽莎的微笑》用赝品替换，并把真迹都贮藏在位于阿尔卑斯山的秘密仓库。
中遇到了2012年，走向毁灭的步伐径直向前……美国西海岸出现了许多“小型地震”，在世界各地冒出许多地裂的征兆。尽管如此，人们依然一如既往着日常生活，并对即将到来的灾难毫无察觉。其中我们的主角杰克逊，一位热情并清醒的作家，正开着车去接他在位于洛杉矶的前妻的两个孩子，莉莉和诺亚 ，并打算带着他们去黄石国家公园进行露营。但当他看到他前妻的现任丈夫——高高挂起的整形大夫高登，他所期待的那份和自己孩子重新团聚的欣喜之情一下冷却了下来。接着镜头转到了一位老爵士音乐家哈瑞，他既是那位总统科学顾问赫斯里的父亲，正当他在旧金山一海岸边的游轮上表演途中，他试图说服他的乐队老友托尼给他远在日本并与之不和的儿子打个电话的时候，突然整艘游轮北海底冒出剧烈的力量彻底掀翻……镜头转到华盛顿，当总统的女儿劳拉接到一个来自法国的抓狂的博物馆馆长的电话时，那位馆长怒斥她所在的基金会是彻头彻尾的骗子时，馆长所在的轿车突然爆炸了。劳拉逐渐意识到她被某个势力利用了，而一系列的背后操纵者恰恰就是他父亲和科学顾问赫斯里。
期间，当作家杰克逊带着他的孩子最终抵达黄石的时候，他们发现所在区域已经被封锁，而没有人能够告诉他们到底是怎么回事。杰克逊刚好碰到了一位热衷爆料的电台主持人，这个怪人相信毁灭将从加州开始，遍及黄石，最后全世界。杰克逊开始将信将疑，但事实告诉他洛杉矶出现的越来越多的裂开的地缝已经开始越变越大，一发不可收拾。
事情越来越糟，并且已无法预料的速度进行着……关于真相的暗示也逐渐浮出水面——世界的精英和有钱人正在建造一个巨型的大船，而里面藏着人类能够拥有的足够物质，直到灾难结束，只有船里的人会重新出来重建文明，繁衍人类。剩下的人都将被浩劫洗劫，简单的来说，这将是挪亚方舟的翻版。
接下来就是暴露的5分钟的超常片断，杰克逊开车赶回洛杉矶，把他的前妻和其现任丈夫都接走，并开着飞机逃离了已经被彻底毁灭的洛杉矶。出人意料的是，杰克逊绝对辗转回到黄石，以找到那个“疯子电台主持人”，并希望能够从他的口中得到能够幸存的方法。但是令人无法想象的是，当他们刚抵达黄石，黄石早已成为了世界最大的活火山。同时，那些自作聪明的精英们准备开始计划好的方舟计划……
最后地震，海啸，火山爆发，火山灰……我们的主角们开始了逃亡的全球之旅……还记得我国的大坝么？其真正的目的其实是……………………最后，全球将被淹没在一片浩瀚的汪洋中，能否幸存？生死未卜！
