Sure, it was in a way a clich' love story, two people from different world's falling in love. But regardless of it being typical it still exposed the different classes in a way that truly made you realize how it was for people back then. Also, many things are clich' for a reason, they most of the time work and have been shown to work time and time again. Without this love story you would have just come away with the basics of this story, the Titanic sinking. But this love story created sympathy in which you felt for Jack and Rose. It made you truly feel how the people on the Titanic were feeling at that exact moment. Families, loved ones and friends were being torn apart. Without the emotion created from the love story you wouldn't have felt nearly as sad or seriously towards what had actually happened to these people.

There's no denying the voyeuristic pleasure deriving from watching (vicariously and voyeuristically) the sinking of the most famous boat in history, an epic spectacle. Add to it a conventional but involving romantic story and at least two sympathetic characters, and you have a wining formula: a star-driven, special-effects spectacle.

The tale is presented an extended flashback, as the personal account of one survivor, Rose. Through Rose as an elderly woman, we are introced to various characters whose fate and reactions are followed as the film unfolds.

The first glimpse of the young Rose (Kate Winslet) is a detailed shot of her gloved hand shown from above as she emerges from a car, obscured by enormous hat.
Clearly Rose belongs to the privileged class; soon she is going to be a trophy wife. In voice-over, Rose says: “To me it was a slave ship taking me back to America in chains. Outwardly, I was everything a well-brought-up girl should be, inside I was screaming”

From these images of wealth and privilege, Cameron cuts to Jack (DiCaprio), a poor but free and daring lad. He wins passage on SS Titanic, embodying youth, energy, optimism, and joy. When Cal first gives Rose the Heart of the Ocean pedant, he describes its royal lineage, claiming royal status: “We are Royalty, Rose.” Though he's American, Cal is associated with the rich passengers, the corrupt elitism of European aristocracy rather than America's egalitarianism. Cal comes across as selfish, possessive, and heartless, standing in direct contrast to Jack's qualities. Similarly, Rose's mother is presented as mercenary, willing to sacrifice her daughter's real happiness in order to gain status and fortune.

The film's only rich character that is not negative is Molly Brown (Kathy Bates), but she is despised by fellow passengers for being a nouveau riche; her money is new, as opposed to aristocratic pedigree. Warmhearted, Molly wants to help Jack, and she is willing to row the lifeboat back at the end f the film to save those freezing to death in the water. Similarly, Rose's positive qualities also develop as she learns to leave the corrupt world of her mother and fianc behind.

In each of his previous outings, Cameron has pushed the special effects envelope. In Aliens, he cloned H.R. Giger's creation dozens of times, fashioning an army of nightmarish monsters. In The Abyss, he took us deep under the sea to greet a band of benevolent space travelers. In T2, he introced the morphing terminator (perfecting an effects process that was pioneered in The Abyss). And in True Lies, he used digital technology to choreograph an in-air battle. She identifies herself as Rose DeWitt Bukater, a survivor of the tragedy. Brock has her flown out to his ship. Once there, she tells him her version of the story of Titanic's ill-fated voyage.

The bulk of the film -- well over 80% of its running time -- is spent in flashbacks. We pick up the story on the day that Titanic leaves Southampton, with jubilant crowds cheering as it glides away from land. On board are the movie's three main characters: Rose, a young American debutante trapped in a loveless engagement because her mother is facing financial ruin; Cal Hockley (Billy Zane), her rich-but-cold-hearted fianc? and Jack Dawson, a penniless artist who won his third-class ticket in a poker game. Especially ring the final hour, as Titanic undergoes its death throes, the film functions not only as a rousing adventure with harrowing escapes, but as a testimony to the power of computers to simulate reality in the modern motion picture. The scenes of Titanic going under are some of the most awe-inspiring in any recent film. This is the kind of movie that it's necessary to see more than once just to appreciate the level of detail.

One of the most unique aspects of Titanic is its use of genuine documentary images to set the stage for the flashback story. Not satisfied with the reels of currently-existing footage of the sunken ship, Cameron took a crew to the site of the wreck to do his own filming. As a result, some of the underwater shots in the framing sequences are of the actual liner lying on the ocean floor.
