沉默講了一個外來者的故事，聾啞女孩的到來對於表面平靜的家庭是侵入，雖然由於她的聾和啞，每個人都對她講自己的秘密，那些齷齪的秘密，並藉此釋放心中的壓力。在西方，外來者是個很典型的形象，就像卡夫卡《城堡》中的K，外來者的闖入，使得觀者可以從一個新鮮的角度去觀察一個全新的世界。在外來者迷惑的觀察下，平衡被打破了，隱藏的矛盾漸漸顯現了出來。那些矛盾實在外來者出現之前就存在的，只是由於種種原因，局內人保持著一種心照不宣的默契，於是矛盾就平衡了，在這種平衡中持續的存在。
導演選取了一個不錯的角度來表現問題。這個外來者顯得很安全，因為她什麼都聽不見，什麼都不能說，她作為一個抽像的人的符號存在，不能對自己造成任何的威脅，卻可以稱為傾訴減壓的對象，於是所有的秘密都集中並且放大了。這個平靜小鎮的平靜的家庭和學校就顯得不再那麼平靜了。家中父女的亂倫，母親失敗的婚姻和吸毒，以及高中生之間早已遠離單純錯綜復雜的關系。這是影片的前一部分所表現的，導演用鏡頭批判的表現了一個看似單純的世界，用Dot的眼睛。
影片的後半部分，這么說並不嚴格，Dot能聽見能說話好像是接近結尾的事情了。從那時起，影片就變得更加的撲朔迷離了。那個沉默的Dot有著自己的秘密表面上是她的聾啞是裝的，實質上卻是發生在她身上的不倫之戀。從這時起，Dot失去了外來者的身份，她便成了局內人，只有導演的鏡頭依然保持者外來者的身份繼續冷冷的看看著一切。這一轉變是很奇妙的。作為外來者，比如《城堡》中的K，一般來說是保持著不同於已經趨於平衡的世界中的某些更加純潔的特質的。可是這種轉變讓外來者也失去了這種純潔，世界變成了純粹的變態。當兩個有著自己秘密的女孩在鋼琴前親密的演奏時，整個電影顯得變態而詭異，這時一種放大的變態。
電影本身是很乾凈的，如題名一樣的沉默安靜，還有貝多芬的故事，寧謐的鋼琴聲，充滿活力的高中生（雖然顯得過於成熟而缺少高中生的很多特點，或許美國的高中生就是如此吧）。還是值得一看的，但是，我想，我是不會再看它的。雖然畫面沒有什麼過分的，甚至非常安靜唯美，it made me sick.
