上周讀完《苔絲》，一直想說點兒什麼，後來竟失語了。《苔絲》這樣的書，以前從來沒有卒讀，現在想來是那時看不懂。現在也沒有讀懂多少，但是也足以讓人失語。若說現在有什麼渴望，就是渴望自己的筆，能像哈代一樣一點不差地勾勒出苦難，就用哈代那樣單純的筆觸。 最大的苦難不是當事人覺知的苦難，是當事人根本不能覺知的苦難。
即便寫這樣一個故事，哈代也還是寫了那個悲劇女孩苔絲的快樂，她好好侍弄雞，甚至還和自己討厭的富家子弟Alec學會了吹口哨，還和同伴們去參加舞會。這要是換個人來寫，不知道會把這時的苔絲寫得怎樣苦大仇深。
可是哈代絕不，似乎他也憐惜筆下的人，長夜未央，先讓這個苦難的精靈快樂一會兒吧。苔絲和Alec 的交集埋下了她一生苦難的種子。這一段落結束的部分最精彩，就是苔搏或絲決定回自己家，她告訴Alec，有兩句話實在太精彩，一是說，如果我曾基游伍經愛你，那麼我現在就不會如此痛恨自己。
還有一句是，我知道說我愛你這對我會有怎樣的好處，可是我不愛你。估計現代很多人都不可能有這樣的堅決立場了，這個立場背後，是全然的真。苔絲的純潔是冰里的水，人只可看見，不可觸摸。這里的描寫是特別耐人尋味的。通篇看下來，有人說Alec很壞，我倒真的沒看出來，他就是那個樣子，但是卻是真實地喜歡苔絲。
甚至，在下半部，他遇到苔絲以後，還真誠地向苔絲求婚。悲劇就是這個樣子吧，你仔細看每一個人，都看不出壞，可是偏偏就是這個人，能夠做出後果極其惡劣的事情來。
苔絲回到自己家，是特別灰暗的一段日子。未婚生子，是一生悲劇的第一幕。可是，哈代還是寫到她年輕的生機怎樣讓她在這樣的打擊中重新站起來。她似乎不用經任何心理斗爭，就接受了自己的孩子，做工，養孩子，沒有抱怨，沒有猶疑。
難怪哈代認為苔絲是最純凈的女性形象。可是，孩子又很快夭折了。她自己給孩子受洗並埋葬後問牧師的話，是苔絲第一次去質問自己生活中發生的事，因為她害怕孩子的靈魂在地獄之火中焚燒。這是苔絲在書中唯一一次作為母親的角色出現，失去的也是她短暫一生中唯一一個孩子。任何一個母親，如果在苔絲的境遇中做到了苔絲做到的，就是當之無愧的母親。
