James Cameron's 「Avatar」 is visually stunning and theologically provocative. (Or so I suggest in today's column.) It is not, however, a very good movie overall. But you wouldn't know that from reading most of the reviews: Cameron's blockbuster boasts an impressive 83 percent favorable rating from Metacritic, and a whopping 94 percent 「fresh」 rating from Rotten Tomatoes' rounp of top reviewers.
Browse through the online reaction from fanboys and film geeks, though, and you'll find that a modest (and appropriate) backlash has been building since last week. (I particularly liked this fan's hostile review, carried out via Instant Messenger after a screening.) The source of the backlash is unexpected, in a sense, since you'd think that a movie like 「Avatar」 — a science fiction epic with groundbreaking special effects and a weak script — would find its most intense apologists on action and sci-fi obsessed sites like Aintitcoolnews and CHUD.com, and its most dismissive critics in the more rarefied air of, say, The New Yorker. But the more highbrow critics have all seemingly decided to grade the movie on a spectacle-driven curve. (Thus David Denby: 「The movie's story may be a little trite … but what a show Cameron puts on!」) So it's been left to the fanboys, the people who've watched 「Aliens」 97 times and worship the ground James Cameron walks on, to insist that there's more to epic-making than spectacle and special effects.
And good for them for insisting. Sci-fi spectaculars deserve to be taken seriously, as pop art if not as high art, and not just patted on the head for putting on a good show. That doesn't require comparing a James Cameron film to, say, 「The Rules of the Game」 and finding Cameron wanting. But it means recognizing that there's a world of difference between a truly great special-effects driven fantasy — like 「The Matrix」 (the first one, not the sequels), or Peter Jackson's 「Lord of the Rings,」 or 「The Empire Strikes Back」 — and a gorgeous disappointment like 「Avatar,」 which succeeds at being eye-popping but doesn't succeed at very much else.

Just Like Heaven is just about the best movie so far this year, and I've seen about fifity of them. As a comedy it's funnier than Bewitched or The Man, not quite as funny as The Wedding Crashers but far more refined. In addition to comedy it's got heart and spirit.

Where the story goes from there is more important, but I don't want to give away any more of the plot.
It remains a pleasant comedy even through the profound life-and-death parts of the story; for only the second time this year Hollywood's made a film that addresses a current issue without preaching their liberal agenda (the other was The Island, which showed immoral consequences of cloning). It's a day before the McAllisters, a large family, go on holiday in Paris. Kevin, the 8-year-old, is despised by everyone else. His mum sends him up to the attic bedroom the night before. When Kevin discovers he has the large house to himself, he has the time of his life, but he is afraid of the neighbour, an old bearded man. Also, two burglars are determined to break in. Kevin pretends to have a party to scare them away one night, another time he lets firecrackers off in the kitchen. Finally, the burglars do get into the house, but Kevin has filled it with booby traps, which see the crooks being burned and banged on the head, among other things.

The overwhelming success of 'Home Alone' (it spawned two sequels), is enough to guarantee that most people will love this story of a family that departs for Paris on the Christmas holidays, mistakenly leaving an eight-year old boy to fend for himself. And fend he does, when burglars threaten to break in unless he can rig enough booby-traps to keep them out.
That's the simple plot in a nutshell. Macaulay Culkin seems to have no problem carrying most of the film with a wide variety of looks, gestures and expressions--but for my money it's Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci who get the main laughs as the bumbling burglars intent on outwitting the kid's traps.
Others in the cast don't have as much to do but do well enough by their roles, particularly Catherine O'Hara and John Heard as the parents who only discover on the plane that Kevin is missing. The laughs are steady, the color photography is great and the slight story is probably every boy's fantasy of what it might be like to be left home alone. Add to that the holiday flavor of Christmas and a pleasant musical score by John Williams and you have the makings of a classic.
The proof is in the pudding--they must have done something right!!
