影片主要是圍繞著人類與機械之間發展的關系為主題，人類自身與機械的人工智慧會何去何從，但影片也僅僅是進行了一種可能性的簡單敘述，主要精力也沒用在這一論點的闡述上，而是放在劇情，動作場面，末世場景設置等。

但值得一提的是，影片充滿了宗教和哲學的一些內容，比如影片的主要人物都是跟宗教有關，Neo（電影中稱為the one ，即救世主）、Morpheus（希臘神話中的神）、Trinity（基督教中的三位一體）等等，影片配樂很多也是宗教的頌歌。
