必須承認有些人具有某些天賦，比如說湯唯說英語。這周三在網站上看到湯唯在戛納做了一段英文采訪，頓時有點呆住了。這讓我想起了自己的英語之路，還有身邊聽到過的種種華人英語。
華人英語
湯唯是我很喜歡的華人演員，特別是演了《色?誡》之後。而我最喜歡看的是，並非是她的表演，而是她的八卦和日常表現。比如，2007年，她出席台灣金馬獎時候，面對調侃，說普通話時候的那份沉穩和冷靜，讓人感覺此人不簡單。
最難的是站在台灣的領獎台上，她的普通話沒有一點港台腔，很大陸。在娛樂圈中，浸淫日久，口音的多樣化，是自然現象，無可厚非。而一個新人，過早地放棄了自己口音，卻也常常是檢驗其自信心的無聲證明。
後來，據說湯唯跑到英國的雷丁大學(Reading University)進修英語，當時以為就是到外鍍鍍金。這回聽到她說英文，才明白下的是真功夫。
在英國，最近一些華人社團和政治人呼籲在公共媒體多出現一些華人的面孔，特別是積極正面的形象。我猜想華人面孔的稀缺，與語言有很大的關系。
在英國大學里，很多身為教授級的華人，也有為自己的英語苦惱。寫作和閱讀已經不是問題，但是說起話來，還是常常有點心虛。在英國這樣一個靠語言和文字驅動的社會里，你的語言，就是你的影響力。雖然以「音」取人也是一種歧視，但是我不相信，有誰會拒絕一付悅耳的聲音，一口地道的RP(Received Pronunciation)口音。
我喜歡閱讀時政類報章，在英文媒體中，能夠牢固地佔據一個老牌雜志或報章寫東西的華人作者基本上沒有。偶爾在《旁觀者》(the Spectator)看到David Tang(鄧永鏗)爵士發表的豆腐塊，能夠在這份相當於保守黨的《求是》雜志上露面，已屬不容易。
這豆腐塊的尺寸，基本上可以證明了華人英語在這個社會的影響度和可接受程度。更多是看到華人稍微被主流寫上一句，就歡呼做了「第一人」，似乎被歷史濃重記上一筆，這說明華人社會底深不夠，有點沉不住氣，目標還不夠遠大。
肢體與語言
在說一門非母語的語言時候，除了言語本身，言語之外的神情、肢體和手勢，也是非常重要的，卻也常常被我們忽略。有趣的是，每一種語言所附加的表情和肢體語言往往都是不同的。英國副首相卡萊格是一個語言高手，除了英語，能說荷蘭語、法語、德語和西班牙。在2010年，克萊格參選之時，曾經有過一段講荷蘭語的鏡頭。
當時，他剛剛和身邊的人說完英語，切換到荷蘭語，與旁邊的荷蘭記者聊起來。突然間，他的面部表情變得豐富起來，略微顯出點滑稽，眉毛的浮動明顯多了起來。
不同語言所帶來肢體語言不同，放到自己的母語里就更加容易看出來。我很喜歡看中國的民間曲藝，愛看中國方言劇。比如，趙本山的《鄉村愛情》，說東北方言的東北男人，與京味電視劇裡面掌櫃、大爺和爺們，接電話、打手機，迎來送往的眼神和肢體語言，區別很大。如果你看過上海、廣州的方言劇，神情舉止差別就更加明顯了。
在英國，我看過很多為了把生意做成，一臉賠笑，Yes加OK到底的中式英語，總是心生遺憾。而如果遇到一個華人，能夠優雅自如，身口心「三合一」地表達自己，總會讓我心生敬意，也是自己努力的目標。
過去，我在中國，說英語屬於熱情高過語言本身。我妹妹曾經評價我說英語，和說瑞安話的表情和腔調一樣。言外之意，當年，我說普通話的時候，神情、舉止和腔調和說英文不同的，後者應該過於草根。
這大概是可以這么理解的。因為普通話，在古代叫「官話」，是當官入仕的人使用的語言。雖然今天這層意義已經消退，但是仍然在用詞和表達上保持了莊重正統的氣質。而對我來說，說一口漂亮英語的人，舉止做派，無法親見，難以模仿一種說英文的風度。
晚上回家，把湯唯說英文的那段錄像再看了一遍。短短的一年學習，她的發音基本上是無可挑剔，但是在肢體語言上，尤其是在表達一些簡單贊美之詞的時候，過度使用肢體語言和小動作，不夠英式英語的冷與硬。
