對中國觀眾來說，最為熟悉的應該還是改革開放後不久引進的英國影片《尼羅河上的慘案》和《陽光下的罪惡》。確實，這兩部拍攝於七、八十年代克斯斯蒂改編新高潮的影片製作精良、演員陣容強大，具有相當高的藝術價值，尤其是前者，所以就讓我們從《尼羅河上的慘岸》一片說起吧。

Christine本是劇團一個默默無聞的小演員，在一個偶然的機會中，她頂替劇團的首席女演員上台演唱，那天使般的美妙歌聲立刻受到了觀眾的熱烈歡迎，也引起了她小時候的玩伴、英俊富有的子爵Raoul的注意。

演出中，Phantom殺死了原本扮演唐璜的演員，親自上台與Christine對唱。Christine發覺這個唐璜其實正是Phantom本人，於是扯下他的面具，讓觀眾看清了「劇院幽靈」的真面目。
Phantom拽著Christine逃往地下室，Raoul隨後趕到，卻不幸落入了Phantom設下的套索。Phantom要Christine作出選擇：是跟他走，還是眼看著自己的愛人丟掉性命？Christine既痛恨Phantom殘忍的行為，又憐憫他的不幸遭遇，最後鼓起勇氣，給了Phantom一個深深的吻。這一吻喚醒了Phantom內心深處的美好情感，他放走了兩個人，黯然獨坐在寶座上。
當追蹤而至的眾人企圖抓住Phantom的時候，卻發現寶座上只剩下了一張孤零零的面具，Phantom已不知去向。自此以後，「劇院幽靈」的身影便從巴黎歌劇院永遠地消失了……
